Mall stories an example of citizen journalism

A couple of months ago, I joined Julius Vaughns on the Aurora section of YourHub.com. A couple of days after I joined the team, Julius and I sat down and discussed Aurora.

During that meeting, Julius told me that since he started at YourHub.com, he has wanted to take an in-depth look at the Town Center at Aurora, the former Aurora Mall.

He wanted to look at the changes that the mall management has put in place since a shooting that occurred there two years ago. He wanted to look at the curfew put in place by the mall, limiting the hours that kids under 16 could be there by themselves. And he wanted to know what other people thought about it.

'Why not?' I told myself.

What I didn't know was how many people actually cared about what was going on at their neighborhood shopping center.

Dixieline opening first Inland site

The first Inland store of San Diego-based Dixieline Lumber and Home Centers will also be the first merchant to open next month at The Orchard - Stone Creek. The 430,000-square-foot community shopping center in Murrieta was approved in 2004, and is under construction off Clinton Keith Road near Interstate 215.

After Dixieline's opening in late May, according to the center's developer, the first wave of additional retailers and restaurants will be opening in July.

Allan L. Davis, president of Yorba Linda-based development firm Retail Development Advisors, said that phase will include Bank of America, Starbucks, Subway, College Cleaners, UPS and Orchard Nail Spa.

The next phase, slated for a Spring 2008 opening, will include Juice It Up, Sushi Camp Plus, Cold Stone Creamery, El Pollo Loco and O'Harley's Pub.

Hollywood Interrogates Al Qaeda

CBS's hit series "Criminal Minds" recently aired an episode entitled "Lessons Learned," where FBI agents traveled to Guantanamo Bay and coaxed a confession from a known terrorist detainee that led to the prevention of an anthrax attack on a Northern Virginia shopping mall. The point of the story was that the regular interrogation tactics (pictured as brutal assaults on the prisoner) were not working, and that the military should adopt the enlightened methods of the crack interrogators from "Criminal Minds."

Hammond retail center for three parishes

HAMMOND — Hammond serves as the retail center for more than 100,000 people in three parishes, according to a study by the Southeastern Louisiana University Small Business Research Center.

The study was commissioned a year ago by Hammond Mayor Mayson Foster to analyze the city’s retail market. Foster released the study last month at a City Council meeting.

"We went to Southeastern because we knew Hammond Square Mall was making changes," Foster said.

He added that the analysis was not done specifically for the mall redevelopment.

Foster said the purpose was to offer research for anyone wanting to open a retail establishment in Hammond.

Yet the study will help Stirling Properties sell the redeveloped mall to national retailers, especially because it is an independent university analysis, said Sterling Chairman Jimmy Maurin.
