Greg has success on a plate

The business beat competition from more than 500 competitors. Mr Hull, was presented with his award at a gala dinner at Manchester's Lowry Hotel hosted by regional food marketers, NW Fine Food.

Mr Hull, aged 47, who has run the butcher's shop for 15 years, said: "We introduced our stuffed pork loin six-months-ago and it's been flying out of the shop so we decided to enter it into the competition.

"The secret is quality produce. We remain successful because we use the finest raw ingredients so when customers get their meat home and cook it they get good results. To win the awards when we were up against people at the top of the game is a real honour."

Wal-Mart on Independence still a go

A Wal-Mart planned on East Independence Boulevard has the rezoning it needs to start building, but an existing business that has resisted giving up its lease is what has delayed the project from moving forward, Charlotte city officials said.

Wal-Mart plans to tear down the Amity Gardens Shopping Center at Independence and Pierson Drive and build a new Supercenter store on the 14-acre site.

Faison and the Providence Group of the Carolinas are working together to develop the site.

The Wal-Mart store would replace the one on Eastway Drive. At 157,000 square feet, it would be smaller than the usual Supercenter, which is normally around 200,000 square feet.

The new center would resemble the Wal-Mart Supercenters on Wilkinson Boulevard in West Charlotte and on Sardis Road North at The Galleria in CrownPoint on the east side.

Essence column: Sacrificing fashion for comfort

If the shoe fits, I must be in Oz. For those of us women who are not blessed with dainty feet like Cinderella, shopping for shoes can be as torturous as having a root canal: you don't have a lot of choices in the matter and the end result is usually painful.

Unlike my 15-year-old niece who is drawn to the shoe section like a moth to a flame, shoes have never really held much attraction for me. Even as a kid, my loathing for loafers or any other footwear was apparent. While my sister pondered over one pair of shoes after the other, I would grab the first pair off the shelf and be ready to flee fashion be damned.

This aversion, however, didn't stop me from making some laughable choices as an adolescent. In the quest for added inches, every young lady has done unspeakable things to their soles in the name of fashion.
