Campus Pointe faces two lawsuits

Two lawsuits filed in the past two weeks are challenging a commercial project at California State University, Fresno. The project has angered Clovis business owners, residents and officials.

The owner of the Sierra Vista Mall in Clovis filed a court challenge against the project April 5, and the city of Fresno filed the same challenge April 12.

Patti Miller, the city of Fresno's public affairs officer, said the lawsuit was filed to meet a 30-day deadline to challenge the project after the California State University system's board of trustees approved the project at a March 14 meeting.

Before the case goes to trial, city officials hope to reach an agreement with Fresno State officials about fees to help ease the effect the project will have on city services.

The 45-acre project is located next to the Save Mart Center on Shaw Avenue and Freeway 168, adjacent to Clovis' city limit.

American Fork's: Meadows to rival Orem mall

When phase two of American Fork's The Meadows development is complete in the next few years, it will rival Orem's University Mall in size and offerings.

Retail stores, restaurants, housing, offices, a park-like atmosphere and more are planned for the phase two portion of the shopping center in west American Fork. But the city's zoning laws might hold up plans for housing.

Representatives of Woodbury Corp. and Woodfield Development presented plans for the next phase of its successful shopping center at a joint session of the City Council and Planning Commission recently.

Lynn Woodbury told the group that the development would be approximately the same size as the main section of University Mall, which they also developed.

George Melara, an architect preparing the design of the second phase, said the developers had a vision for the center.

Status of Campus Pointe unclear

The same week that two lawsuits challenged Fresno State's proposed Campus Pointe development, the California State University chancellor's office pulled back an official notice of a key approval vote. While that did not reverse the CSU board of trustees March 14 vote approving the project's environmental report, according to a CSU spokeswoman, it has prompted confusion among the project's opponents -- including Fresno city officials."We know of no provision in [the law] for filing a notice of rescission," Deputy City Attorney Kathryn Phelan said. "We don't know what a court would do with that."Some were left wondering if the project had lost its approval altogether. The controversial $167 million Campus Pointe project would bring apartments, a hotel, shopping, offices and a 14-screen movie theater to the east end of campus.Critics say the development is at odds with the university's core educational mission.
