Always looking up

Anyone who has met me knows without explanation why I chose the name Short Stories for my column; but for those who have not, let me explain. I am 4-feet, 11-inches tall, actually, Im 4-feet, 10-inches tall but I think it is OK to round up to the next highest number; after all, I need all the help I can get.

I have heard the clich Good things come in small packages but somehow, I am not convinced that there are very many advantages to being short. There are however, at least a million disadvantages I can think of.

For example, buying slacks that fit length-wise is not an easy task. For some reason, apparel makers seem to think that everyone has a 34-inch inseam. This means that almost every pair of jeans I buy has to be hemmed or rolled up. I have the same problem with Capri pants.

SWC 'fan parks' in the pipeline

Johannesburg - The idea of expanding fan parks in which people can watch the 2010 Soccer World Cup in every local municipality outside the host cities is under discussion.

Dennis Mumble of the World Cup's local organising committee (LOC) said on Monday his organisation was having discussions with Fifa about licensing for the signal required to enable such fan parks.

He was speaking at the national conference of the SA Local Government Association (Salga) in Midrand on Thursday.

"In June, we will have more information about it," said Mumble.

He said the LOC had decided there would be no base camps for visiting teams inside any of the host cities.

"We shall spread the benefits beyond the nine host cities.

"It opens up responsibilities for non-host cities."

Want to leave a legacy

He urged delegates from such centres to consider the security and accommodation requirements, should they take up the opportunity.

True Religion Apparel to Open Two Branded Stores in North Texas ...

VERNON, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--True Religion Apparel, Inc. (Nasdaq:TRLG) today announced the signing of two lease agreements to open new stores at NorthPark Center in Dallas, TX, and at The Americana at Brand in Glendale, CA. Both stores will carry the entire True Religion line of apparel.

"There are few malls bigger in square feet or fashion labels than NorthPark Center, and we chose this location for the union of architecture, design, art and high fashion, all of which attracted us to open a branded store in Dallas," said Michael Buckley, president of True Religion Apparel, Inc. "We also chose Glendale for its appeal as the next big shopping destination for Los Angeles with the increasingly popular open-air retail shopping and urban living environments that Southern Californians gravitate toward.

Ithaca's good traits too long to list

"With some level of success, Ithaca has tried to maintain a traditional downtown shopping area that includes the Ithaca Commons pedestrian mall and Center Ithaca, a small mixed-use complex built at the end of the urban renewal era," reads the one sour note among Relocate America's accolades for the city.

"Some in the community regret that downtown has lost vitality to two expanding commercial zones to the northeast and southwest of the old city," the Web site says.

"These areas contain an increasing number of large retail stores and restaurants run by national chains."

"That's the nature of business," Bonn said. "We're a community that has multiple business nodes."

The listing will make Ithaca more noticeable, said Carol Margolis, president of the Ithaca Board of Realtors.
