Centralia City Council to Consider Northwest Side Rezoning

The Centralia City Council Monday night will be asked to approve zoning changes for 56 acres of property along Aaron Parkway north of McCord Street on the city's northwest side. The changes will clear the way for construction of a new Aldi's store, strip shopping mall, drug rehabilitation center, and a new location for Karchmer Pipe and Supply. The Community Development Department is recommending the changes as a good use for the property.

The Council will also be asked to approve a development agreement for the land with Don Karchmer that will specify how tax increment financing funds collected from development of the property will be allocated.

Another resolution proposes the city pay its final obligation of 76-thousand dollars to the owners and developers of Centralia Manor and Centralia Estates that was part of a 1988 TIF Redevelopment Agreement.

Woman shoplifter tussles with store guard

An 18-year-old woman who allegedly shoplifted $481 worth of items from Macy's at Stanford Shopping Center Monday got into a "physical tussle" with a female security guard before she was arrested, Palo Alto Police Sgt. Sandra Brown said.

The security guard ended up with a scratch on her face and the alleged shoplifter ended up in the Main Jail in San Jose, charged with strong-armed robbery.

Myra Cuevas of Redwood City allegedly took jeans, a necklace and a shirt from the store but was confronted as she was leaving. Cuevas had a 14-month-old baby and a friend's 15-year-old child with her, Brown said.

Westfield Great Northern thrives after expansion

They had different parents and were located two cities apart, but in 2002 they became as close as their shopping mall foundations could bring them. Midway Mall in Elyria and Great Northern Mall in North Olmsted were purchased by Westfield Corp. — one of the world's largest shopping center groups with investment interests in 121 shopping centers in four countries. Signs were lowered and raised. Minor renovations were made. But just as it appeared as though both would move in the same shopping direction, a final sale separated the two shopping giants, and it wasn't the kind of “sale" malls are known for. In 2006, Westfield chose to sell seven properties in several states, and Midway was on the list. Westfield cited strategic growth plans as its reasoning behind the decision. A spokesperson said Midway wasn't in the company's “investment pipeline." Great Northern and SouthPark Mall in Strongsville would remain the only two local shopping centers of Westfield's four Ohio properties.

Marion to become bigger and better

WESTFIELD Marion will rival the city as a shopping destination if a redevelopment worth more than $200 million goes ahead, Marion Mayor Felicity-Ann Lewis said yesterday.

The upgrade would make it the second largest shopping centre in Australia with a floorspace of more than 150,000sq m, behind Melbourne's Chadstone Shopping Centre which will cover 170,000sq m after its latest makeover.

Planned additions to Westfield Marion include 90 shops, a first-floor supermarket, a two-level mall connecting that supermarket to the existing David Jones department store and 900 carparking spaces.

The redevelopment will create about 700 construction jobs and close to 750 retail positions.

Ms Lewis said the expansion would make Westfield Marion the preferred destination for shoppers from across the state during its "honeymoon period".

Business fair comes of age

Patrick Burch said potential customers were knocking at the door of his new bio-medical treatment center in Spokane Valley before the company hung up its sign.

And as a new member of the Greater Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce, Burch was able to introduce his business in front of 1,000 other members.

"We've gotten one of our best clients through the chamber and they're now championing our cause," Burch saidWednesday during the chamber's 5th Annual Business Fair at the Mirabeau Park Hotel.

The supportive environment aided by business growth in the Valley has contributed to a doubling in participation by exhibitors since the fair debuted in 2003 at the Spokane County Fair & Expo Center. A festive atmosphere akin to an open-air market filled the hotel ballrooms Wednesday as 80 regional exhibitors showcased their companies.
