Brush fire scorches 2 acres

SOMERS - Dozens of volunteer firefighters from Westchester and Putnam counties helped battle a stubborn brush fire yesterday on Orchard Hill Road.

Roughly 2 acres burned between the Olde Orchard Hill Farm at 50 Orchard Hill Road and the dead end of Sutton Place, said Somers Assistant Fire Chief Bob Totten, who commanded firefighting efforts from the rear of the farm.

"You'd think that after all the rain we had, we wouldn't have a brush fire, but that's not the case," Totten said.

The National Weather Service had warned that the dry heat and gusty wind put parts of the Lower Hudson Valley at risk for brush fires. Yorktown firefighters also extinguished a small brush fire near the Triangle Shopping Center yesterday.

Totten said the rain did help firefighting efforts in Somers because the ground was still damp.

Prime Outlets in Tracy sold Developers buy 155000-square-foot site ...

TRACY — Two investors from Contra Costa County have purchased the Prime Outlets, one of the first retail shopping destinations built along Interstate 205 during the construction boom of the past decade, for a non-discount store price.

Under the banner Northwest Outlets, based in Walnut Creek, Gary Patterson of KLP Properties and Rick Cordes of Cordes Commercial, Inc., who operate outlet shopping centers in Oregon and Idaho, bought the 155,000-square-foot site from Prime Retail LLC of Maryland for $20.5 million.

Cordes said it was going to be nice not having to get on a plane to visit one of their properties.

"We're local and hands on," Cordes said. "This is exciting to us. We plan on putting some blood into this."

Their first six months will focus on stabilizing the existing tenants and leases, filling the few vacancies with brand name outlets, and working with current staff and the community to give the center a "fresh look and image."

"We like the way the Bay Area is

growing and Tracy and Manteca is integrated into that," Cordes said.

IBM Teams With Simon Fraser University to Fight Crime

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA and TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - April 23, 2007) - Simon Fraser University has received a $5-million donation from IBM of new technology that will help law enforcement officials fight crime by understanding when, where, and why crimes are committed.

Under the agreement, IBM will work with SFU's Institute for Canadian Urban Research Studies to create a crime prevention and analysis lab. Two RCMP research chairs, Drs. Patricia and Paul Brantingham, will lead research to examine how factors such as city design, the layout of road networks, and shopping mall hours affect the location, frequency and severity of urban crime.

The SFU lab will be equipped with IBM's threat and fraud intelligence and law enforcement technology. This includes IBM's Crime Information Warehouse, Entity Analytic Solutions, Global Name Recognition, Information Integration Suite, DB2 Data Warehouse Edition and OmniFind.

The Shops in Desert Passage at the Aladdin Becomes Miracle Mile Shops

LAS VEGAS, April 2 /PRNewswire/ -- The Shops in Desert Passage at the Aladdin will begin operating as Miracle Mile Shops in May 2007.

With rapidly advancing exterior and interior reconstruction throughout the center, Boulevard Invest, the joint venture of Tri Star Capital and RFR Holding, and owners of The Shops in Desert Passage at the Aladdin, are proud to celebrate the shopping center's new name: Miracle Mile Shops.

Miracle Mile Shops, named in part to promote the 1.2 miles of retail space the mall covers, signals the center's transformation to a sleeker, more urbanized and contemporary space. The multi-million dollar makeover focuses on de-theming the original design for its transition into a more streamlined, contemporary look. The renovation is a move to create synergy with the over $1 billion renovation and re-branding of the Aladdin Resort & Casino into the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino.

Retro games in "barcade" renaissance Lisa Baertlein in Los Angeles

IN BROOKLYN'S warehouse-turned-artist district of Williamsburg, young hipsters flock to Barcade to sample its roster of microbrews and mingle with the likes of Pac-Man, the Mario brothers and Frogger.

Walls of the bar, which runs on wind power and has its own MySpace profile, are lined with dozens of bulky, old-school arcade games that decades ago lured coin-clutching teens to crowded, dark rooms with deceptively addicting game play.

Barcade's popularity among Williamsburg's 20- and 30-somethings reflects a wider trend in the video game industry - "retro" games are back as parents introduce their offspring to the beloved games of their youth.

Few segments of the $US30 billion ($36 billion) global video game market needed it more than the US arcade business, which has shrunk to about a quarter of its peak size.
