| College plays matchmaker
Anyone wanting to drive a train or pilot a plane, arrest a crook or read children a book, should have been at the Carl Sandburg College job fair Thursday morning. The annual job fair open to the public as well as students put more than 50 prospective employers in one room where hopeful job seekers could ask questions, read a brochure or fill out an application. "That's the beauty of a job fair," said Jan Hipple coordinator of employment resources for the college. Participating employers ranged from the Illinois Air National Guard and the Knox County Sheriff's office to the Methodist College of Nursing and the Great Oaks Camping Association. Hipple said the average attendance for the college's job fair is about 300, with some even going home with more than a free ballpoint pen.
South SF Woman Wanted For Fleecing Elderly
(BCN) SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO South San Francisco police are searching for a woman they believe is part of a sophisticated ring of con artists that targets mentally challenged and elderly victims. According to South San Francisco police, Ruby Rene Thomas befriended a mentally challenged man who was shopping by himself in the Tanforan Mall in San Bruno. Thomas then convinced the man to open accounts at two of the mall's jewelry stores, investigators said. Thomas then allegedly purchased $5,000 worth of jewelry using her victim's account. Police say Thomas then convinced the man to open a Wells Fargo checking account in South San Francisco, telling him she was only visiting the Bay Area and couldn't open an account in her own name. Thomas then transferred $42,000 into the account and directed the man to withdraw specific amounts and give her the cash, police said. After the final withdrawal from the account, Thomas told the man she had to leave town because her mother was sick, police said.
Let Washington's History Be Your Guide
Amid blaring sirens, a roaring Harley and a band of protesters, a group of nearly two dozen is glued to Mary Anne Hoffman, a Washington Walks tour guide, as she spouts history facts. The weather is dreary and cold, but the participants are content to stroll down Embassy Row while the petite southern Virginia native amuses them with anecdotes of the neighborhood's famous residents, such as why Alice Roosevelt Longworth's front garden was full of poison ivy and how the Indonesian Embassy is connected to the Hope Diamond. This weekend, tour company Washington Walks and other volunteer guides will offer tours as part of Cultural Tourism DC's third annual spring WalkingTown, DC event, which gives tourists and residents a good excuse to explore D.C. neighborhoods a skip away or way across town.
Understudy-itis….
Understudies – ready or (sometimes) not – have been much in the news lately, with the high-profile absences of Connie Fisher Richard Griffiths and Billie Piper from respectively The Sound of Music, Equus and Treats putting the spotlight on those who execute a largely unsung professional duty, which they have to do to the collective groan (whether inwardly suppressed or verbal and/or even physical as some patrons fall over themselves to get to the box office for a refund or exchange). Of course the circumstances are sometimes absolutely unavoidable – we're not talking here of Martine McCutcheon who famously gave fewer performances in the role of Eliza Doolittle than her understudy did when My Fair Lady premiered at the National's Olivier, but was seen going on lunch dates and shopping trips when she was supposedly ill.
The Lure of Discounts and Goodies
It is early in the week, but the weather is good and people are getting out a lot more. So if you are looking for a few free things and discounts nearby, check out the upcoming events: The new Harris Teeter in Broadland's Southern Walk will open its doors today at 5:30 for the "Taste of Teeter" sampling event. Goodies include wine and "unique product" samples. From what my kids get their hands on in shopping trips we've had there, it should be an event to please. It has been the talk of Broadlands for weeks now, and seems the only perceivable drawback is that unlike Safeway, they won't be offering discounts on gas. Which reminds me, cheap gas - best places to get it? Ashburn, Leesburg, Purcellville, Sterling Looks like Leesburg is hovering in the $2.79 range and the best deals in Ashburn are around $2.91.
