Alliance shaky as Rakuten turns up heat on TBS

Tensions between Tokyo Broadcasting System Inc. and Rakuten Inc. are mounting following the online shopping mall operator's announcement Thursday that it would raise its stake in TBS above 20 percent.

Negotiations for a business partnership between the two companies have stalled for more than a year, and Rakuten's announcement will likely inflame the situation.

To avoid being accused of attempting a hostile takeover by TBS executives, Rakuten announced its planned stock acquisition to the broadcaster in writing.

On Feb. 28, TBS said that it plans to introduce anti-takeover measures.

One protective move is the use of a so-called poison pill.

If a group obtains a stake in TBS exceeding 20 percent of outstanding shares without first informing it of the intended acquisition, the company can issue subscription rights for new shares to all shareholders except for the takeover group.

PNP Seizes P84 Million Worth of LV and Lacoste Fakes

MANILA - The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) of the Philippine National Police (PNP) conducted recently a back-to-back raid, and confiscated counterfeit Louis Vuitton and Lacoste items valued at more than P84 million.

ring around the retail gold mine

Rumors about who will be the next University of Kentucky basketball coach aren't the only ones going around Georgetown. Some residents are wondering what's going to replace the Country World Flea Market on U.S. 460.

A plan for a 368,000-square-foot retail center was approved there last fall.

"Everyone is trying to get out what they are going to put there," said Becky Livesay, 34, citing rumors about Target or Meijer locating there.

It's likely that Scott County, like the other counties that ring Fayette County, is going to be a little less country when it's built.

With some of the ring counties growing at least three times as fast as Fayette, they have now become destinations for big-box retailers -- and the tax dollars they bring in.

"The key thing is that the corporations go where the people are," said Steve Austin, president and CEO of Bluegrass Tomorrow.

Weather forces SHSU Relay for Life indoors

With only six hours until showtime, Sam Houston State University Relay for Life organizers knew they had to do something. With the impending threat of heavy rains, a later forecast of hail and an impending tornado warning, it was clear the event could not be held at Bowers Stadium. "We called everyone we could think of," said Allison Davis, the event's entertainment co-chair. "It was pretty stressful and really scary. We had planned for rain or shine, but not hail and tornados." With only three hours to go, they hit pay dirt at West Hill Mall, who agreed to host nearly 200 college students, cancer survivors and members from the community. "The mall people opened their arms to us," said Krystle Foss, the even'ts chair. "Whatever we asked for they said they would provide." Until 7 a.m. today, as stores begin to open, the SHSU Relay crew will just be going home, after a night of karoke, dance contests and pacing the floors of the mall's center, all in the hopes to raise money for a cure to cancer.

Chain-store thefts costly for police

As shoplifting drains an estimated $30 billion annually from America's retail industry, thefts at big chain retailers are tying up man-hours for some local police departments.

While those retailers provide jobs, convenience and tax dollars, police in Richland and Montgomery townships say they generate a lot of work for them.

That includes encounters with crooks with long rap sheets, sometimes armed, and crews of criminals that conspire to steal hundreds if not thousands of dollars of merchandise.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation said big box stores, such as Wal-Mart and Kohl's, aren't necessarily targeted more by thieves than smaller retailers. But, they have a wide array of very desirable items to steal and are certainly desirable targets, said Read Hayes, director of the Loss Prevention Council, a Gainesville, Fla.-based group that studies theft in the retail industry.
