Police alerted vs ‘Akyat-Bahay’ gangs

National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) chief Deputy Director General Reynaldo Varilla has ordered additional mobile and foot patrols in posh subdivisions and commercial centers in Metro Manila to foil the efforts of "Akyat-Bahay or burglary" gangs to rob vacant homes over the Holy Week.

Varilla put the 15,000-strong NCRPO on heightened alert and ordered increased checkpoint and police visibility operations at bus terminals within the metropolis to maintain order and prevent petty criminals from preying on province-bound commuters.

He will meet with the NCRPO's five district and 37 station commanders in Camp Bagong Diwa in taguig City at 1 p.m. Monday to fine tune the security preparations for the Holy Week.

Under Operation Plan (Oplan) Semana Santa (Holy Week), the NCRPO will tighten security at churches, posh subdivisions and commercial centers in Metro Manila: "We will be activating our neighborhood watch primarily to thwart attempts by Akyat-Bahay gangmen from striking with impunity."

Under the neighborhood watch, Varilla said the NCRPO will mobilize barangay officials, village associations and security guards to ensure that residences temporarily vacated by their residents are amply guarded: "Those who are leaving their houses should coordinate with the village security guards or their neighbors to keep an eye on their residences to keep criminal elements at bay."

The additional foot and mobile patrols will be deployed to areas where Akyat-Bahay gangs struck during past Holy Week celebrations.

Carjacking Victim, Witness Help Police Capture Suspect

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Two strangers were united by a crime Monday morning after a 77-year-old woman was carjacked at knifepoint.

Ronald Myers was arrested and charged with aggravated robbery and kidnapping.

"The victim did a great job under pressure and also the witness did an outstanding, and just a wonderful job," said Columbus police Sgt. David Sicilian.

Janette Gillespie had just finished shopping at Eastland Mall, when Myers pulled a knife, grabbed her keys and drove off with her car.

Gillespie, 77, ran towards Mabel Michael's SUV.

"She was very upset and I was just telling her to stay calm, that we were going to get him," Michael said. "And we got him."

Gillespie got in Michael's SUV, and they followed the suspect while calling 9-1-1.

Burj Tower now tallest structure in Middle East, Europe

Under development since the past three years to reach an unspecified height, Dubai's 'Burj Dubai' Tower is now the tallest structure in the Middle East and Europe and at 110 levels it shares the honour of having the largest number of floors, alongside Sears Tower in Chicago. The 380-metre high tower is also the world's ninth tallest building. Burj Dubai is only one metre shorter than the Empire State Building - the second tallest in the US and is on its course to become the world's tallest building.

It is the centerpiece of the US$ 20-billion Downtown Burj Dubai, a mixed-use project in the heart of Dubai featuring residences, commercial space, hospitality projects and several retail outlets including The Dubai Mall, the world's largest shopping and entertainment destination. To date, 2,67,426 cubic metres of reinforced concrete and 49,684 tonnes of reinforcing steel have been used in the construction of Burj Dubai.

PALO ALTO: DREAM PLAYHOUSES TO BE DISPLAYED FOR AUCTION BENEFIT

Architects, designers and builders are letting their inner children run wild as they work to design original life-sized children's playhouses and garden structures to be auctioned off at Stanford Shopping Center's biennial Dreams Happen Playhouse Gala and Auction.

Beginning May 5, the finished products will be displayed at Stanford Shopping Center and will be auctioned off June 2 to benefit Rebuilding Together Peninsula.

"Dreams Happen is an important event for us and we're inspired by the incredible participation year after year of Stanford Shopping Center and our volunteers,'' Seana O'Shaughnessy, executive director at Rebuilding Together Peninsula, said. "The proceeds raised fund our efforts for up to two years and allow us to significantly impact the lives of low-income families on the Peninsula.''

The design teams have named their structures with tantalizing names like Waggy the Dog, Go'pher Gold Mine and Tahoe Trading Post, according to a statement from Rebuilding Together Peninsula.
