Living Designs: Ethan Allen among home-furnishing stores opening ...

Home-furnishings manufacturer and retailer Ethan Allen Interiors Inc. has opened its first store in the Triad.

The high-end store - covering 17,500 square feet and offering full design services - is off Hanes Mall Boulevard at Shoppes on Little Creek near Texas Land & Cattle Steak House.

The store employs 18 people, including 12 designers.

"We're very excited to be in this Triad market," said Andrea Crews, the senior project manager. "The response has been wonderful."

Hanes Mall Boulevard is beginning to look like furniture row. Ashley Furniture recently opened a store near Hanes Point Shopping Center and Hudson's Broyhill Furniture Gallery is expected to open a store at Shoppes on Little Creek next year.

Ethan Allen's design center has a different feel from that of the traditional furniture store.

What's next? California dairy producers map out a path to the future

"We think it's important that the dairy industry embark on a pathway where they debate the pros and cons of the different alternatives and figure out how exactly they want to adopt them and then move forward over the next several months or year and adopt one of the solutions that they choose would best fit the industry," said Palecek.

"The devil will be in the details on these things and a lot more work will have to go into this to flesh out the various options," he said.

Area's Bass Pro nears opening

The $3 million worth of taxidermy hanging on the walls alone is enough to suggest that Bass Pro Shops' newest location in Bolingbrook is not an ordinary sporting goods store.

Other features of the store, which opens Wednesday, include murals and artwork depicting Illinois nature and wildlife, a 30-foot-tall waterfall and 18,000-gallon aquarium. The store's optical display counter, where customers can examine $2,000 binoculars and test gun scopes from a look-out platform, is valued at $70,000.

"We think of our stores as part museum, part aquarium and also a retail store," said Rich Josepher, promotions manager for Bass Pro, as he led a tour of the 140,000-square-foot store on Thursday.

The Bolingbrook store is part of the new Promenade Bolingbrook shopping center, which opens Thursday.

Mall owners tune in to the small screen

Consumers may be able to run from advertisers with the help of technologies like TiVo and ad-free satellite radio, but they certainly cannot hide.

Take for instance the shopping mall. Not so long ago, you could stroll through a local mall without being bombarded by ads from ceiling to floor.

But that is changing as shopping centers -- looking to profit from their near-captive audiences -- are selling ad space on everything from food-court tables to garbage cans.

And in the latest attempt to grab the attention of the increasingly distracted consumer, Orlando's Florida Mall recently installed a network of high-definition television sets that will broadcast commercials along with entertainment, news and mall-marketing programs.

The mall-based television network, dubbed the OnSpot Digital Network, is being rolled out by the Florida Mall's parent company, Simon Property Group.

Callison, with a reputation for working in downtown urban centers, has worked on Ala Moana Shopping Center in Honolulu, Harrods White Hall in London, and Skymart at Chek Lap Kok in Hong Kong, according to Westfield.

Macy's plans gourmet-style fast food in eight Florida stores

Macy's plans to introduce its own brand of quick-serve eateries and restaurants by world-famous chefs Wolfgang Puck and Todd English to Florida stores as a part of a national expansion project.

The department store chain expects to bring Macy's Taste Bars -- featuring a menu of signature soups, salads, sandwiches, as well as Macy's brand gelato and coffee -- to as many as eight stores across the state, including a location at the Town Center mall in Boca Raton, Macy's Florida spokeswoman Melissa Goff said Tuesday.

In addition, Macy's will open a Wolfgang Puck Express at a Broward County store and a café by Todd English called Fig's at a Palm Beach County store, Goff said. She declined to say which mall stores would attract the new restaurants but said plans call for them to open this year.

Gourmet grocers compete Head here on 3g

The arrival of Trader Joe's in Chapel Hill this year just might spark a little friendly competition among our local upscale food stores. And that's OK with me.California-based Trader Joe's confirmed this week that it will build a 13,000-square-foot store in Chapel Hill's Eastgate Shopping Center, in the spot that most recently was an Earth Fare store and was once home to A Southern Season.Trader Joe's is moving into an area known for its gourmet food selection, with Whole Foods and A Southern Season just down the street. Other well-known food establishments, such as the Weaver Street Market, are nearby.A Southern Season spokeswoman Deborah Miller said area foodies might learn to love the new and existing stores. The new store will likely attract shoppers from Durham and parts of Orange County, she said."If you're going to be here, you might as well stop in both places," she said.
